St. Honoré Family Day Celebrates Patron Saint of Bakers and "Raises Dough" to Help CASA Kids!

Children handcraft their own Galette Sucre pastry and support kids in need

PORTLAND, Oregon (March 1, 2006) — Children become "bakers for a day" and help kids in need at the 3 rd annual St. Honoré Family Day on Sunday, May 21, 2006   from 10-2 p.m . at St. Honoré Boulangerie, 2335 NW Thurman St., Portland. This annual celebration honors Saint Honoré, France's patron saint of bakers and is also a fundraiser for the local chapter of CASA for Children, an organization that advocates for the best interests of abused and neglected children. All proceeds raised from the sales of Galette Sucre ($5 for 4 galettes) will support CASA for Children. CASA greeting cards, designed with original artwork by children, will also be available for purchase. "The boulangerie is all about community," says Dominique Geulin, owner and baker. "We started this fundraiser the year we opened as our way to support children and give back to the larger Portland community." Geulin chose CASA for Children as this year's recipient because one of his staff bakers has recently started volunteering with CASA's Clackamas County chapter. "Connecting to the community is important to my staff as well," says Geulin, "and I want to support their causes."

Make Your Own Galette Sucre
St. Honoré Boulangerie will transform into a hands-on bakery on Sunday, May 21st as visitors of all ages handcraft their own Galette Sucre, a round, flat sweet brioche bread made of eggs and butter and sprinkled with sugar. Each Galette Sucre will be baked in the clay firebrick oven and served warm - to the delight of the young bakers.

Saint Honoré - Patron Saint of Bakers:
As tradition goes, a young man named Honoré became the Bishop of Amiens in 554. During his service a number of miraculous events occurred, which spared farmers, millers, and bakers from natural disasters. Residents of France connected the miracles with Bishop Honoré and in 1204 a Parisian baker built a chapel to commemorate him. Today, the chapel is no longer standing, but the name, Saint Honoré, is etched in a gate leading to Faubourg and Rue Saint Honoré in the heart of Paris. Dominique Geulin has placed a statue of Saint Honoré next to the claybrick bread oven in his boulangerie.
